The Social Assistance Department at Nanoose First Nation seeks to aid those who meet the criteria for income assistance, as well as to assure that they are taking the right steps to becoming self-determined by providing supporting resources for them to be successful in cooperation with NFN’s Employment Training Department.

ELIGIBILITY

NFN Social assistance is intended to serve as last recourse for adults and dependents who meet the criteria for financial support according to the Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) Social Development Policy and Procedures Manual. Following approval by the SA Department Manager, payments will be issued directly to members as long as they continue to qualify for SA and keep an up-to-date file with the SA Department.

stage 1: five week job search

Prior to applying, the entrant must complete a five week job search consisting of the following activities:

  • Submitting resumes and/or cover letters targeted at particular potential employers;

  • Telephone inquiries to potential and specific employers;

  • Fact finding interviews, when completed in combination with employer contacts;

  • Responding to ads, (internet or other);

  • Participating in employment interviews.

Entrants will be assessed based on whether or not they have completed a satisfactory work search prior to being eligible to apply for Social Assistance.

Stage 2: interview

Entrants will be interviewed by the Social Assistance Department Coordinator to determine if they qualify to begin the application process for Social Assistance.

Entrants are encouraged to see the Employment Training (CSETS) Coordinator at NFN, who will be able to assist with employment readiness activities such as, resume/cover letter writing and much more. For more information on employment training activities click here to visit the NFN CSETS web page.

If the entrant wishes, they may also visit the Education Department to see what options are available

declaration / social assistance days

Declaration days: are held on the 23rd of each month (or the Monday after if the 23rd falls on a weekend)

Social Assistance days (check days): are held on the first of each month (or the following Monday if the 1st falls on a weekend)

Note: Those looking to apply must also have the primary Tenant of their residence contact the NFN Housing Department and update their Tenancy Agreements and household occupancy in order to meet eligibility requirements. Annual Tenancy Agreement Renewals must also be completed on April 1st in order to be considered for application.

oTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

The Social Assistance Department duties also include:

  • Coordinating closely with NFN’s Employment and Training Department to assess the needs of the community to provide services to members

  • Completing proposals to secure funding for implementing programs with the goal of increasing chances of employability.
